Alan Fink has been painting professionally for over 40 years, but has been drawing and painting for most of his entire life having been influenced at an early age by his mother, Maryland artist Paula Fink (1927-2018). He continued his post secondary art education at the University of Maryland College Park and UMUC. Formal art studies continued under Ann and Hans Schuler, Jr, at the Schuler School of Art in Baltimore, where he learned traditional Old Master techniques of drawing, painting, and sculpture. In 1980 he took over directorship of the Fink School of Traditional Art started by Paula in 1965, and in 1989 moved the school to its current location in Historic Reisterstown, MD. He maintains his personal studio and gallery there and continues to teach drawing, pastel, and painting in addition to creating his own works.
